I am delighted to welcome you to the Institute for Public Leadership at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. Our mission is rooted in an ardent commitment to advance the practice and study of public leadership in ways that resonate with the diverse tapestry of our society and the crucial needs that our local and global communities face.

At the heart of our institute's vision are five key areas that will guide our work into the future:

Conducting Research for Impact: We are dedicated to conducting applied and scholarly research on issues of current and emerging significance in the realm of public leadership. Through our research initiatives, we will strive to be a valuable resource for public leaders in the state and the nation, providing evidence-based solutions and thought leadership to address our most pressing challenges.

Enhancing Excellence in Teaching: We are dedicated to enriching the education of future and current public leaders. Our academic and professional programs will cater to a broad spectrum of learners, from undergraduate and graduate students to mid-career professionals and executive-level officials and staff. By embracing diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, we foster a dynamic learning environment that reflects our society’s rich variety of perspectives and backgrounds.

Cultivating Robust Experiential Learning Opportunities: We believe that tactile experience is an invaluable aspect of leadership development. Our students will have the opportunity to engage in experiential learning with local, state, and federal partners. Through fellowships, internships, research projects, and practical experiences, they will gain the hands-on knowledge and skills necessary for effective and ethical public leadership.

Empowering Underrepresented Voices: We are committed to breaking down barriers and clearing pathways to entry to public service careers. Our institute strives to support students, especially those underrepresented in public service positions, by providing access to public leadership careers through partnerships, skill development, and professional mentorship. We believe that diversity in leadership is essential for addressing the complex challenges of our time.

Building an Accomplished Community of Mentors: Our institute aspires to serve as a hub for accomplished local, state, and federal practitioners. We facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience between these leaders and our students, faculty, and the wider public. By fostering this active community, we empower future leaders with the insights and perspectives of those who have navigated the complexities of public service.

I invite you to explore our website frequently to learn more about our programs, faculty and affiliates, and initiatives. Whether you are a student looking to embark on a journey in public leadership, an experienced practitioner seeking to share your expertise, or a member of the public interested in our research, we are here to serve you and collaborate with you.

Thank you for visiting the Institute for Public Leadership at the University of Maryland School of Public Policy. Together, we can shape a more inclusive, innovative, and effective future for public leadership in Maryland and beyond.

Sincerely,
John C. Ronquillo, Ph.D.
